and Promotion Centre – APTDC Promoting Livelihoods & Business
opportunities thru bamboo

APTDC is working for promoting various applications
of bamboo. For - proper utilization of the resource. promoting micro
enterprises, promoting & linking of village level pre-processing
units industry to large scale industries and support the overall
system for its sustainable operations.
Background :
APTDC started working in the area
of bamboo in year 2002. Towards sensitising various agencies &
entrepreneurs, APTDC organized a seminar cum exhibition “Business
Opportunities in Bamboo Sector” in Visakhapatnam, Andhra
Pradesh - duly involving Andhra Pradesh Forest Department , TIFAC
(part of Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India),
Visakhapatnam plywood manufactures association & other National
and State level expert agencies and entrepreneurs.
During year 2005-‘05, APTDC extended its expert services
to National Mission on Bamboo Applications
(NMBA, Govt. of India), in quantifying the bamboo resources
of Andhra Pradesh, States policy frame work, various machinery manufacturers,
technology providers & efforts etc., and became one of the working
partner of NMBA.
As a an extension of this assignment, APTDC in association with
an activated carbon manufacturing industry, carried out experiments
for charring of bamboo (as per the drum charring unit design of
Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai), generated activated carbon
and case study as presented in World Bamboo Congress, New Delhi,
in Feb.'04 . Also, CII – APTDC has extended its industry networking
support to NMBA in identifying industry partners, for promoting
managed Bamboo plantations, utiliastion of bamboo for thermal applications
thru gasification, incense sticks etc.,
APTDC continued its interactions with Andhra Pradesh Forest Department
on various happenings across the globe and on 15 th Sept.'04, APTDC
bagged a world bank supported assignment from A P Forest Department,
under its Andhra Pradesh Community Forest Management (APCFM) Project,
for extending consulting services for demonstrating various opportunities
in bamboo for creation of sustainable livelihood thru sustainable
usage of bamboo resources of the state.
Under this APFD –
APCFM – APTDC assignment, efforts are on to create primary
processing facilities to process and supply bamboo as per the
need of the buyers .
Line of Effort & status of the joint effort of
APTDC & A P Forest Department, :
Incence sticks
So far, over 1500 sustainable livelihoods are created,
in Bellampally, Khagaznagar, Manchiriyal divisions in Adilabad
& East Godavari Districts.

Furniture
Around 50 young employable youth were
trained in Kakinada Division of East Godavari District.

Utility
products
Around 50 members
were trained in Jannaram, Khagaznagar division, Adilabad
District. |

Constructions
Executed - a pproximately 600 sq.ft constructions
at Yeleswaram in Kakinada Division & 2000 sq.ft construction
in Khagaznagar division. |

Handloom
products
Samples were developed by Weavers Service
Society (Ministry of Textiles), Hyderabad and sticks were
given to handloom weavers of Warangal , to develop products,
confidence & markets for both - sticks making &
weaving. |

Match
splints
Technology has been demonstrated in Sivakasi,
drawing the support of Indian Plywood Industries Research
& Training Institute, Bangalore . Trying with different
bamboo species & efforts are on to achieve commercial
success. |
